Native Art: click to enlarge picture
We carry a good selection of local native artists!

Centuries before European explorers discovered the waters surrounding Campbell River, the First Nations people were living here in harmony with nature and the life cycles of the salmon.
The Coast Salish people abandonned their villages in the early 1880s and returned south to Comox and Qualicum Beach. The Laichwiltach people, a tribe of the Kwagiulth nation further north, moved in and established villages at what is today known as Campbell River and Cape Mudge on Quadra Island.

The native culture and arts are well alive and active today and you find traditional and modern representations of the native culture in paintings and carvings in our gallery.

We do mail orders to Canada, the US and to any other destination!

Over time, we will add more of the native artwork we carry to this page. You will always find more in our store!

Mark Henderson

Mark was born in 1953 and is a member of the Wewaikum Band in Campbell River. His father, the late Chief Sam Henderson, was a well known Kwakiutl carver. His mother, the late Mae Quocksister Henderson, was the eldest daughter of a high ranking native family.

Mark began painting traditional Kwakiutl designs at the age of eleven under his father's guidance. He works mainly with acrylic paint on paper, often producing limited edition silkscreen and giclee prints from his original paintings.

Andy Everson

Andy Everson was born in Comox, BC in 1972 and named Nagedzi after his grandfather, the late Chief Andy Frank. Although he began drawing Northwest Coast art at an early age, Andy's first serious attempt wasn’t until 1990 when he started designing and painting chilkat-style blankets for use in potlatch dancing. From these early self-taught lessons, he has tried to follow in the footsteps of his Kwakiutl relatives in creating bold and unique representations that remain rooted in the age-old traditions of his ancestors. The ability to create and print most of his own work has allowed Andy to explore and express his ancestral artwork in a number of contemporary ways.

Before ordering Andy's prints, please check availability. Because of the low editions, they are sold out quick!

NEW: Transcendence

Transcendence: "For the BC-Canada Pavilion at the Beijing 2008 Olympic games, I was asked to create a design for the heart of the display. It was to be a design that depicts one of the symbols of British Columbia: the Kermode, or “Spirit Bear.” One of the stories explaining the origins of this unique bear come from the Tsimshian people who recount how Raven changed every tenth black bear white in order to remind all that the earth was once covered in ice.."

Majestic

Majestic: "The regal nature of the kingfisher lends itself to being called “Majestic.” It sits on its perch with a crown of feathers and waits for the appearance of fish in the water. Upon spying the fish, it flies up into the air only to hover before diving straight into the water. Kingfishers truly are remarkable birds that deserve such a royal title..."

Eyes on the Prize

Eyes on the Prize: "Traditionally, my ancestors would often troll for the large chinook salmon. They used hooks made from wood and bone and baited with herring. The chinook would follow the hook, mesmerized by the bait. They kept their eyes on the prize, not knowing that this singular determination would be their last. This print is made to celebrate the gift of the chinook. It is also created to rejoice in our own ability to focus on a goal and knowing when to back off. "

Cleansing

Cleansing: "Ritual cleansing varies greatly across North America. Some First Nations, for instance, utilize smudging to cleanse and protect themselves and others. This entails washing with the smoke of sacred plants such as sage or sweetgrass. Others enter sweatlodges to bathe in steam and connect with their ancestors. Here they may be gifted visions as part of their cleansing."
