| Irene Klar's latest etching "Counting Stars " |
People, their textiles, pattern decoration and colours serve as inspiration for Irene Klar's artwork.
Her interest in universal design elements has taken her on far reaching travels around the world from Alaska to Australia,
from Guatemala and Peru to Morocco. These themes are incorporated into her paintings and prints, which are full of the intense
colours of the marketplaces.
We carry Irene's Etchings and Posters for a number of years with a growing fan community and focus on her indigenous
Northwest patterns. Now we are glad to add high quality gift and decor items which feature Irene Klar's distinct
artwork.
We do mail orders to Canada, the US and to any other destination!

Irene Klar: Caretakers of the Earth
Open Edition Print, image 24.75" x 16 "
professionaly framed, metal frame (photo on request)
All ages gather together and share the experience of watching their stories retold. Winter ceremonies
might include the bird/creature masks in Hamatsa dance such as the Raven and Crooked-Beak. These masks feature hinged mandibles.
Kwakiutl potlatch ceremonies can only be held with a tremendous amount of help and cooperation from the entire village. Guests
might number in the hundreds and ceremonies can last from 24 hours to well over a week. The brown borders are representative
of the sides of the classic bentwood box. The lid is embellished with discs of mother-of-pearl.

Irene Klar: Chief Patterns
Open Edition Print, image 13.5" x 39.75"
professionaly framed, metal frame (photo on request)
These bold blanket designs are known as Chief Patterns and are woven by the Navajo of Arizona and
New Mexico. They typically have strong black and white horizontal stripes interrupted in 9 points by a geometric coloured
pattern. These are at the top and bottom comers and the midpoint in between on each side, then at the top, middle, and bottom
on the centreline. The patterns are halved on the edges of the blanket and are made complete when the wearer draws the two
edges together as the blanket is wrapped around the body. The lid is embellished with discs of mother-of-pearl.

Irene Klar: Mokasin Trail
Open Edition Print, image 19" x 39"
professionaly framed, metal frame (photo on request)
Irene Klar was asked to create a poster painting for The Trans-Canada Trail Foundation. Her response
was "The Moccasin Trail" symbolic of the long history of travel across this country from east to west and north to south.
The first trail was made on foot.
The people depicted represent the many tribes of Canada from east on the right hand side to west
on the left side: Micmacs in the Maritimes (included are a Micmac porcupine quill box and an appliqued child's hat), the Algonquin,
Sioux, Woodland Cree (typical embroidered cradleboard), the Blackfoot of the southern prairie wearing a Hudson's Bay company
trade blanket, and the Haida in a button robe at the extreme left (west).

Chamula is a small village in the state of Chiapas in southeastern Mexico next to the Guatemalan
border. The women of Chamula can easily be recognised in the market town of San Cristobal de las Casa as they wear distinctive
blue cotton shirts with red and white rickrack trim. Their clothing reflects a huge range of blues. The border of "Chamula
Market" is taken from several finger-woven sashes from the area.
